Reconnecting with Joy: Lisa's Hypnosis Story

Not long ago, Lisa and her husband moved from Alaska to Wyoming. That move meant a change of scenery, work environment, and community for Lisa, and it triggered trauma and depression responses in her mind.
"It was a rough transition for me," Lisa said. "I struggled to get out of the funk."

One of the biggest changes that Lisa noticed was her lack of interest in running. Years ago, Lisa started long-distance running as a healthy way to cope with past experiences and a food addiction. She came to love the sport and started running for charities.
After her move to Alaska, Lisa's husband noticed her struggles and brought home a flier for Levitate Wellness. A few weeks passed, and she finally made an appointment.
This was not Lisa's first time trying hypnosis. Several years prior, she saw a hypnotist on her remote Alaskan island to work through various relationship traumas and food addiction. In that time, Lisa learned how to process big emotions and painful flashbacks in productive ways.
"You can take shots, you can take pills, you can run a marathon every day, but if you can't fix your brain, you won't beat any anything," she said.
Fast forward to now, Lisa felt that her past exposure to hypnosis prepared her to try it again, saying, "Once I'm in, I'm all in."
"I've always kind of done my own thing, but it was important to me to heal," said Lisa. "I had to ask myself if I was willing to sit with the pain again. The depression was really affecting me. It was time for me to get my focus back. That's where Angie comes in. I think Angie and I have really connected."
Lisa said it didn't take long for her to feel comfortable with Angie.
"Her willingness to be vulnerable is what I like about her," Lisa said. "I don't want someone who is so clinical they can't get to know me. She's very good at knowing when you just need to talk. I'm sure she has a structure, but what's important to me is that she's there for me when I need my person."
For those who are unsure about hypnosis, Lisa says they should give it a try with Angie, citing her openness and willingness to listen as major strengths.
"She is all in, and if you're all in, I think you're going to match with Angie," said Lisa. "If you're going to go all in, it's going to be painful, but when you come out on the other end, you have much healthier ways to deal with it."
Additionally, Lisa also likes that Angie is up-front about her skill set and unafraid to suggest other resources to help her clients.
"Angie is clear about what her training is. She doesn't cross a line," said Lisa. "She isn't afraid to tell you when there are more things that need to be talked about medically, and I appreciate that about Angie."
Lisa, a speech language pathologist, came into hypnosis with knowledge of the brain and trauma. She understood Angie's explanation of the amygdala and the primitive brain, and said that hypnosis has helped her "shift out of that lower, reactive brain and move into that frontal lobe."
Lisa explained that Angie tailors her sessions to meet individual needs and that Angie's questions, wordings, and prompts create a relaxing rhythm for the client. Angie's recordings, in particular, helped Lisa prepare for regular sessions. She also noted that, during a hypnosis session, the client is still aware; they can hear, stand up, and move.
"You're not locked in your body," she said. "Angie says some people feel euphoria, but for me, I feel more relaxed."
Now, after weekly appointments transitioning to biweekly appointments, Lisa is back to running consistently. She is also sleeping better and has an improved outlook on life. She's looking forward to traveling for marathons and retirement in the near future.
"This year is about reconnecting with joy and knowing that God is in control," said Lisa. "The hypnosis, for me, is about allowing that all back in. It doesn't mean I don't have hard times, but it allows me to go back and remember what joy feels like. I don't have to lose my joy anymore. I can be sad now without being devastated."
